Deep within the blackness of space, resides a fear that cannot be explained. Ir resides there, watching and waiting. Like the spider in the corner of a room, waiting. What we expect it to be and what it is, will be much different.
That there is a horrible danger that awaits us all. No matter who and where we are in the life, this monstrous devourer of souls waits for us to cross the threshold to the next reality. This voracious creature awaits all. This is the journey of one woman . . .
Myung never had a chance in this world. She struggled for her first breath of life. The cruelty of man's god, did not deter her from living. And the trials that continued on throughout her life never deterred her from enjoying life as some people never will or can understand.
But now Myung, looks at the beeping monitor beside her bed. Charts lay scattered at the foot of her bed, and she can hear surgeons outside her room, trying to talk in a hushed silence. But no one whispers good news. No never. She knows that at only 37 years old, she is going to have to be prepared to walk that walk, past the leviathan and into the next reality.
She remembers how her father would prepare her for this last walk. This journey, that he told her that all people had to make.
"There is no heaven and hell, babygirl. Only continued existence and the end of existence. What you do in this life and how well you are prepared for this walk is what will determine your battle with the leviathan."
He would tell her this consistently and often. He, in the perception of his sins, felt that his battle was going to be a hard one. And that the mistakes that he had made in this life, would give the leviathan an advantage over him. He swore that he would not allow his babygirl to become the fodder of a creature who feed off the pity and sadness of a person. Troubling you with your own weaknesses, the leviathan would most certainly consume your soul, ending your existence. And your pathetic pleas to your gods, only made the consumption of your soul that much more appealing.
Now she sits, staring at this beeping monitor. Each beep peeling away one second of the few remaining seconds of her life. She knows that the end is imminent, and in some strange way, feels the comfort of her father's words.
"If I have to regurgitate from the belly of the leviathan to save your soul babygirl, I will."
She felt the journey was close. Her hearing was fading in and out. For some reason she felt a dryness in her lips, like parched. When her vision started to blur, she let her eyes gently close. She was afraid to a certain extent, but not so afraid that she would fight the inevitable to her last breath. The peace with which she left this world, would help her achieve entrance to the next. It was peace that would bring her hope. Hope of besting this leviathan.
Everything was black. In this space, not even the stars could shine. The emptiness and the gnawing hunger of the leviathan, eclipsed all light. There was nothing here. Not even the entrance to the next reality.
She wasn't sure if she was walking or if the nothingness around her seemed to move her on her own, without her knowledge. What was strange was the feeling of movement, but the lack of visual confirmation. The eyes deceive, and so Myung thought it best to not allow them to be a crutch. She closed her eyes . . .
She heard the booming voice of a thousand voices in unison. The voice of a thousand deaths, and a million resurrections. The wailing of death and the tears of joy of birth. She feel the heat of the flames of hell and the cool morning breeze of heaven's reward. This voice said but one thing. One thing to her. What her response was, would determine her continued existence. This is what the voice told her . . .
"I am your god. Will you acknowledge me? Or will you defy me?"
The answer seemed obvious. Too obvious. Was he trying to trick her with such a choice. If she choose to acknowledge him, it seemed he would let her pass. But if she choose to defy him, he would surely consume her soul. She thought . . .
"You are not my god, I defy you. You are nothing more than a grotesque doppelganger of a much grander entity."
"You may pass. Your existence continues on."
She remember that a conflicting life always brings about turbulence. A creature of consumption would not want a irritant. There are no cosmic Rolaids. Those that caved in from fear and apprehension, were quite easy to consume, and therefore devoured like delicious morsels.
Her thought wandered to what her father said to the beast's ultimatum. As she drew closer to the gateway to the next reality, she was sure of what her father said. He was a strong man, and no doubt defied the creature, and would surely be waiting for her on the other side. Wouldn't he?
