"If sexual orientation is (completely or almost completely) a conscious choice, then social and cultural influences probably play a large role, as they do in "lifestyle" choices such as what foods to eat or how to throw a birthday party. This hypothesis predicts that in societies where (for example) homosexuality is widely discussed or accepted, more people will report themselves to be homosexual. For those who believe homosexuality is immoral, this theory provokes concern that positive or even neutral portrayals of homosexuality will harm children, adolescents, and even adults, by influencing them in that direction."
en.wikipedia.orgI have often asked, both homosexual and heterosexual friends a question along these lines. It has always been a curiosity for me, as I never really give much thought, as to my sexual choice. My conclusion comes from three simple factors --
1) My up-bringing. I was raised in a Christian religion, and was taught that homosexuality was a sin to God. "Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind" 1 Cor. 6:9 So what I was taught probably had a lot to do with how I thought about homosexuality. Although the fact that I have sinned before God in many other categories, I don't think that the fear of sinning against God is why I choose heterosexuality.
2) The human form. This one is easy. I likes a woman's breasts.
8-) That may not seem important, but it is for me.
3) Sexual role. I think that both men and women find themselves in a certain sexual role. Although I could say it as black and white as dominate or submissive, there is a lot of gray in between these two roles, as either a man or a woman can play either role.
"Some people believe that homosexual behavior is wrong but do not believe that the homosexual orientation is chosen. This often leads to the conclusion that people who are non-heterosexuals should be treated with respect or compassion, but that they should be discouraged from acting on their "immoral" and spontaneous erotic desires. This is the view taken by the Roman Catholic Church."
en.wikipedia.orgThis is something that I cannot understand. It is easy for those that are against homosexuality to explain, because it gives them a nice easy explanation for why God would allow a person to have these feelings of homosexuality, even though it is a sin.
What I find more confusing, is that the majority of homosexual friends/acquaintances that I have, will side with the non-choice idea. That they were born homosexual and that they had no choice in it, other than accepting what they are.
I tend to think the opposite. I feel that I made a choice to be heterosexual, that it wasn't written in my genes somewhere, as if I had no choice in my sexual preference.
What do you all think?
How do you think you reached the sexual preference that you do have?
Do you think that homosexuality is a sin? And if you do, why would God allow one to be born with such a sin, if it is not a choice?
And what, if anything, do you think decides a person's sexual preference, if they are born with? IE is it hereditary?
What would you do?
