What Would You Do?

 Comic Book Geeks 101

You don't always know what goes on in someone's head. You think you have them figured out, but you don't. You think there is nothing to this person, nothing to who they are, what they will become. But that;s just it, you don't know. Some of us don't even know ourselves, much less what someone else is capable of.

People are all wired differently, and just because it seems that they are cross-wired, doesn't mean that they are. You don't know what has happened to them and how it has effected them.

Take for instance someone who people might consider a geek. For arguments sake, a comic book geek (since I can relate). You think they have no grasp on the real world, because they emerse themselves in a fantasy world. So what makes them out of touch because of that?

Do you know what appeals to most when it comes to comic books? What appeals to you about the entertainment that you partake in?

Gotta work now . . . I'll continue later . . .

Let's take sports for example. Most sports appeal to those that already have atheletic abilities. To those without such abilities, these atheletes seem superhuman. So to those bystanders they seem heroic as the score that final touchdown or that hole in one. Actors and actresses get to protray themselves as other people, which live so much grander lives than the ones they have. They live their fantasy out. Atheletes are the same in their own sport. They are the hero, whether it be a lone hero or part of a team.

Comic book readers are no different. They look to the writers and artists to convey the feelings they have about themselves. To write a story that speaks to them about the heroics of superheroes. Something that lifts them up from the normal and gives them a feeling of belonging. Because they feel that they are alone and no one understands them. And as a rule, no one does. Comic book readers are not to be considered of the norm. Why? Because they can tell you all six Infinity Gems and their origins. They can resite The Coyote Gospel, in Animal Man #5. Or the story of how Wolverine lost his adamantium fighting Magneto, In X-Men #25. And how he got it back in Wolverine #100. They can tell you the names of all five Green Lanterns. (Just so you know, Alan Scott, Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, and Kyle Rayner.) Or the intricate story of The Age of Apocalypse, from the X-Men comics.

But these aren't what alienate them from society. It is society that alienates them. Society tells them that they are geeks and unusual to the rest of people. So the comic book reader falls into that role, conciously, or sub-conciously. So they are baranded. Pathetic, fat, pimply, adolecent males (90% of comic readers are male. Have you seen Wonder Woman? No wonder than huh?) still living with their parents, spending all their money on more comic books.

But that's not true. Granted, as in any medium, there are those that take it too far. But also as in any medium there is balance. Entertainment is entertainment. It is how people view it as a whole.

A lot like sex. Everyone has different tastes and preferences. What seems strange to you may seem normal to someone else. There is no right ot wrong, there is just different.

Just the musings of a comic book reader. And in the over 10 years I've been collecting comics, I've learned not to judge a book by its cover. (if I had I probably would have never read the Dreadstar series by Jim Starlin.) And so people are the same. They may have a certain apperance on the outside, but inside, if you take the time to look, you might find someone totally different than what you expected.

We are quite normal people that just seem to have a different taste, that because of years of ignorance, remains geeky. Still, Hollywood has tried to bring such comic heroes to the movie screen in order to take these charecters and make them appeal to a broader audience. But you will find that many people still do not know much about these charecters, even though they may watch the movies. So they can sit and watch the movie, trying to poke holes in the plot, in an attempt to make them fit with the comic book continuim, as I so often do. But that's the fun of being a comic book geek. When I make complaints about Fantastic Four, no one knows what the hell I'm talking about.

Gotta go again . . . be back to finish it . . .

So don't judge too harshly the next time you drive by a comic book convention and see someone dressed as Spider-Man, waiting in line to buy tickets.

Well I hope that you all have enjoyed induring another one of my posts. When it comes to comic books, I can talk forever. Because really before I got married, comic books kept me sober part of the day anyway. It's hard to read when you've been drinking gin & juice all night. Yall know that, just look at my typing most nights.

If I had one storyline or one series that I think everyone should read, comic book reader, or not, is The Watchmen. It was published by DC Comics. There are really no words to describe just how this series is so phonominal. Just to give you a taste. It deals much about how superheroes deal with the real life. I'm not talking about girl problems and not fitting in. I'm talking about what if there were superheroes in real life? It talks about the real things they have to deal with. Since they were a government sanctioned superhero team, there is much about politics and the such. They were used by the government in the Cold War, to combat espinoge. But the story takes place after there are no longer working for the government and trying get on with what is left of their lives. Meanwhile, there is someone trying to kill them all one by one. Whether it is the government or someone else they don't know. The story was written by a British writer, Alan Moore. Excellent read, plus it is collected in a graphic novel.

Well I've rambled enough and your probably tired of me talking about comic books. Take care all and see you on the next post.

 Thank You Miss Terri

"Ramblings of an old soul" (bookmarked on my blog). What a refreshing read that was. I suggest many go and see what R.B. has to say. I think that is enjoyable, because it seems that he writes without thought of what other people will say. For the most part history has shown that the things that wrong with society and government and such things are well hidden. No one wants to say what needs to be said, unless they get some kind of publicity out of it.

Take for instance one of the most irritating (to me) groups of advertisment that I'm subjected to see when I watch TV. thetruth.com. I don't know why, I just do. They make tabbacco companies out to be evil corporations ran by, Mumm-Ra or Mr. Burns. (Who remembers Mumm-Ra? What show? I'm giving out gold stars again, for the right answer.) But the thing is they are not. They are simply selling a product that is in demand. They are not deciving the consumer anymore than a used car salesman. The responsibilty resides on the consumer to make sure that this is a product they want to use, based on the information that is available to them. Which the tabbacco companies do. In fact, many of them provide useful information about quitting smoking, the dangers of starting the habit, as well as, how to talk to your children about not smoking. That doesn't seem evil to me. That doesn't seem decietful, despite what the spotlight hungry people of thetruth.com would have you believe.

But in today's society, the blame must be placed squarly on someone else's shoulders. so that a person can avoid taking responsibilty for the decisions that they make. And that is sad. For what does that teach children? That when you do something that backfires on you, find a lawyer and your sure to be paid for your own stupidity. Yall remember the lady and the hot cup of coffee from McDonald's. Well I'll be damned if I want cold coffee. Hell if I spilled cold coffee on myself from McDonald's, I'd probably have a complaint to make. But such is society. Only we as individuals can make the changes ourselves and hope others follow. Take Abraham Lincoln's example, and what he did at his time that was what no one wanted to hear or happen and yet it did. He led and we are still waiting for some people to follow. Try to make a difference, that's all you can do right now.

What will you do?

 O.R.E.O ... Nabisco ... *ding*

You know I hate drama, I really do. I don't watch soap operas, because of it. Life isn't drama, that is why we are entertained by it. What some may thing is drama in their lives, is just life. Why do you think that soap operas and shows like OC, 90210, and Desperate Housewives is so popular. We crave the shit. We think we would want that kind of drama in our lives, but you wouldn't if you had it. Yeah who wouldn't want to be Green Lantern? But just imagine all the stuff he has to go through to be who he is. (Which I imagine most of you not knowing who the heck I'm talking about, are going to skim right over to the next sentence.)

There is a point, I just have to get to it. This is now the second time, I have found this person and there asinine attitude towards people and their opinions. There is a differnce between sharing your opinion and putting someone down to do it. And topping that off with the Cool Whip of degrading language. I know I know, why let it bother you? I don't know, ignorance is just irritating to me. There is something about people that make a comment just to see what happens. And since I left my "be a better person" attitude outside in the shop on the forklift, that the comments that I made, although subtle, will probably lead to drama. The only hope is that someone that would make comments like this just to get a rise out of someone, doesn't understand the great use of sarcasim. We will just have to see.

At any rate, both instances were blantant attempts to get the author of these blogs rilled up. Well it is thankful that both the authors of these blogs, are way more mature than I would want to be. There are two outstanding people that bring a good postitive and festive light to blogstream.

So once agian I say -- "Quick Shane pass me the Bitch-B-Gone. But this time I think we need industrial strenght, because appreantly it didn't work last time!"

If your reading . . . piss off if you don't have an intelligent way to express your opinion.

I'm going to try and be a big boy and ignore it now.

What would you do?

 Snap Into A Slim Jim

I saw this deal on the news the other night about people using children's social security numbers to get lines of credit. Like this one lady tried to get like her 8 year old or so, daughter a savings account to help teach her how to save money. Well when she got to the bank, the bank showed on record that there was like $100,000 worth of credit card charges on her credit report. And there was this other guy who when he was 7 "bought" a houseboat. Well this guy here, I forget his name, goes around the country doing seminars to help parents and children protect their credit, from people that would do things like that.

And I don't why that surprised me. Nothing people do these days should surprise me. But to ruin a person's credit before they are even able to use it as an adult, is just really shitty. But then again, as I've always said, give someone a chance to do something they think they can get away with and they will do it.

Then The Simpsons came on after that, and that was a much needed break from the stuff that goes on in real life. It was one of the old Christmas specials, where Homer gets a Joe Dimaggio baseball card from Mr. Burns (can't remember why) and Homer goes to the Comic Book Guy and sells it for an ass-load of money. So they go shopping at the premier shopping mall in Springfield for their Christmas shopping. And Homer spends all his money on a gift for himself and doesn't get anyone else anything. Then after watching Chirstmas Carol, he decides to change his ways. And then he's trying to do so much good that he's outdoing Flanders. And then Flanders gets jealous and wants to outdo Homer. Anyway it ends up that Homer steals all the Christmas gifts, and Homer and Flanders end up giving them back to everyone.

And so it was a nice change from the depression of the news. Well anyway, took an early lunchbreak so I'd better get back to work. Take care yall and see you in chat soon, not too many days left.

 Adam Warlock -- Sober

I was just wondering why everyone actually gave me real answers to that post. I was more thinking people were going to post -- "What the hell is a PZ-9 Liner?", than actually business answers I got. That's funny I try to get a rise out of yall and you fire back with actual answers. What a riot.

Sorry that I am a bit talkative this afternoon, but a whole weekend of no posting does that to me. And think of it this way, for this week all my post will be sober. That's probably the first time since my very first post (I was just tippsie then). The mind of Adam Warlock when he's sober. Won't that be a hoot?

Ummm . . . I need a beer. 8-)

Well enough work for today . . . I'm getting the hell out of here. Talk to you all tomorrow.
